How to Apply for a Habitat House

Guidelines

The selection of families who purchase homes from Habitat for Humanity is done by the Family Selection Committee using these three criteria in a way that does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, age, handicap, religion, national origin, family status or marital status, or because all or part of income is derived from any public assistance program.

  1. Need for adequate shelter. Presently living in Grant County or Benton area for at least one year in unsafe, unsanitary, overcrowded, or high cost housing. Examples of inadequate housing include residences with: no indoor plumbing, poor heating, leaking roof, overcrowding resulting in three or more to a bedroom, and unsafe or unsanitary conditions.
  2. Ability to pay. The average mortgage payment is approximately $520 a month including mortgage, property tax, insurance, and maintenance escrow. So an applicant would have to make at least $20,733 per year to afford this house payment. See Income Requirements section for more details.
  3. Willingness to partner. Applicants must be willing to put in 200 "sweat equity" hours, per each able bodied adult. These hours may be made by painting, construction, babysitting volunteer’s children, preparing meals for volunteers, attending fundraisers, etc. Applicants also must be willing to let Habitat for Humanity use their names in advertising.
Household Size Gross Annual Income
1 $20,733
2 $21,950
3 $24,700
4 $27,450
5 $29,650
6 $31,850
7 $34,050
8 $36,250

Income Requirements

The mortgage payment on a Habitat house cannot exceed 30% of the household income. Mortgages can be from 15 to 30 years. Persons with a total gross household income that is very close to the figures listed on the chart to the right may be eligible to apply.
