Habitat for Humanity of Grant County (HFHGC) is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.
Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor – “sweat equity” – into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
Habitat for Humanity of Grant County became an official affiliate in 2001. Since then, our affiliate has built nine houses in Southwestern Wisconsin. Our first building project was a fire-restoration in Lancaster. The eight builds since have all been “stick builds” in Boscobel, Potosi, Lancaster, Benton and Cuba City.
The houses that Habitat for Humanity of Grant County builds are simple, decent structures and are not hand-outs. Partner families put in a large amount of time before and during the build process and work side-by-side with our local volunteers to build a home that is affordable. Habitat for Humanity of Grant County offers a no interest loan to partner families, who in-return make monthly mortgage payments that help fund future building projects. It truly is a spirit of “neighbor helping neighbor”.
